Åsmund Færavaag

Scenographer

Åsmund Færavaag is a Norwegian set designer whose work merges architecture, sculpture and theatre. Educated in Italy, he has been Alan Lucien Øyen’s closest scenographic collaborator since 2006, shaping the visual identity of winter guests with strikingly crafted environments that fuse precision with poetry.

Færavaag is known for his use of untreated wood and large-scale constructions that transform the stage into sculptural landscapes. For the Norwegian National Ballet, he designed the monumental rake in Nothing Personal (2021), built entirely in wood and engineered so that entire sets emerged from the floor. In The Hamlet Complex (2020 redux) he created the unforgettable upside-down cemetery, an image that has become emblematic of the production’s exploration of memory and mortality.

His scenography for winter guests often balances architectural boldness with delicate theatricality. For America – Visions of Love (2009) he designed the celebrated L-shaped set that framed the action like a cinematic screen, while in Simulacrum (2016) he created intricate paper landscapes that folded between fragility and monumentality. His most recent collaboration, Antigone (2025), extends this exploration of scale and symbolism into a contemporary reimagining of a Greek amphitheater.

Færavaag has also worked internationally, with Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, where his rotating wooden forms for Rusalka(2019) were hailed as haunting and transformative, and with Nederlands Dans Theater and other leading European companies. Across contexts, his scenography maintains a distinctive material honesty and an instinct for making space itself a dramatic force.

Åsmund Færavaag has worked on the following winter guests productions: Antigone (2025), SuperAmateur (2017), Psychopatriot (2016), Simulacrum (2016), Coelacanth (2013), America – Visions of Love (2009), and Autobiography of Unevents (2006).
