Light designer
Martin Flack is a lighting designer, scenographer, technical director and producer, and currently serves as Managing Director of Unge Viken Teater in Lillestrøm. He has collaborated with Alan Lucien Øyen since 2004 and became a founding member of winter guests in 2006. His first lighting design for Øyen was the seminal If We Shadows Have Offended for Gothenburg Opera Dance Company, which marked the beginning of a close partnership that has continued for two decades. Flack is Øyen’s principal collaborator in scenography and lighting, contributing to winter guests’ signature visual style as well as to commissions for Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, the Paris Opera Ballet, the Norwegian National Ballet, and other major international companies.
Trained in stage and lighting technology, Flack’s practice spans lighting, scenography, sound and video, as well as production and stage management. His designs are characterised by precision, atmosphere and a cinematic sensibility that has become integral to winter guests’ aesthetic. Alongside his freelance design work, he has collaborated with leading Norwegian and international institutions including the Bergen International Festival, BIT Teatergarasjen, Oktoberdans, Grieghallen, the Edinburgh Fringe and the Borealis Festival.
Within winter guests, Flack has created both scenography and lighting for key productions: lighting for Jingle Horse!(2015), Simulacrum (2016), Story, story, die. (2019), Still Life (2024) and Antigone (2025); and scenography for Lilly & George (2012), Bird in Magic Rain with Tears (2011) and The American Moth (2021). His visual contributions have been central in defining the company’s international reputation.
