Andrew Wale

Creative Associate / Performer

Andrew Wale is a British actor, director and writer whose career spans theatre, musical theatre and contemporary performance across Europe and beyond. He devised and directed Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others (based on songs by The Smiths), which opened in London before touring nationally, and Anonymous Society (based on songs by Jacques Brel), which won the Edinburgh First Award, the Total Theatre Award for Best Physical Theatre, and the TMA Award for Best New Musical. He has also directed Sarah Kane’s Crave, Samuel Beckett’s Footfalls and Come and Go, and Ragnar Hovland’s Kanskje Aller Helst Der. Alongside this, he has worked internationally as Associate Director on large-scale musical theatre productions, including Les Misérables and Mamma Mia! staged worldwide.

With Alan Lucien Øyen and winter guests, Wale has been a long-time creative collaborator — as writer, performer, dramaturg and co-creator. He co-wrote and performed in America – Visions of Love, Avenida Corrientes, Bird in Magic Rain with Tears, Lilly & George, Jingle Horse!, America Ep. 2: Psychopatriot, and Coelacanth, for which he received the Hedda Award for Best Stage Text. He has written text for the dance works Flawed and Simulacrum, and for OBRA, a play with big band commissioned for Bergen NattJazz 2015 and later presented at the San Sebastian Jazz Festival. His dramaturgical and writing work has also been central to major commissions beyond winter guests, including Cri de cœur(2021) and Bon Voyage, Bob (2018) for Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, as well as projects for the Paris Opera Ballet. He continues to develop new writing projects, including an opera for children based on a short story by Tove Jansson.
