Sound Designer
Gunnar Innvær is a Norwegian composer and sound designer, and one of Alan Lucien Øyen’s closest collaborators. Since What’s Not to Love? (2007) he has worked alongside Øyen and winter guests, developing a shared artistic language where sound and staging grow inseparably together. Their collaboration has spanned nearly two decades and a myriad of productions, performed on stages around the world.
Innvær is Head of Sound at Carte Blanche - the Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance - while also creating music and sound design for theatre and opera productions across Norway and internationally. He has designed for Det Norske Teatret, Gothenburg Opera and the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, as well as for Øyen’s major commissions abroad. He was sound designer for Bon Voyage, Bob (2018) at Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and Cri de cœur (2021) at the Paris Opera Ballet, both directed by Øyen, and continues to contribute to projects that bridge large-scale institutions and independent theatre.
His work is marked by a distinctive layering of atmosphere, rhythm and emotion, ranging from finely detailed acoustic textures to immersive electronic soundscapes. Beyond the stage he composes and performs with the experimental music collective Hemmelig Tempo, expanding his exploration of sonic environments into the gallery and installation context.
With winter guests, Innvær has provided sound design for some of the company’s most defining works, playing a central role in shaping its identity and international reputation.
Gunnar Innvær has worked on the following winter guests productions: Antigone (2025), The American Moth (2021), Story, story, die. (2019), SuperAmateur (2017), Simulacrum (2016), Jingle Horse! (2015), Coelacanth (2013), Lilly & George (2012), Bird in Magic Rain with Tears (2010), Avenida Corrientes (2009), America – Visions of Love (2009), and What’s Not to Love? (2007).
